When we get our wish, pregnancy doesn’t require medication of almost any kind.  Often, a simple prenatal vitamin will be the only thing the doctor ordered (quite literally).

But sometimes our bodies don’t cooperate and there is vomiting in the 1st trimester, severe back pains in the 3rd trimester, and little sleep in either trimester.  There are colds and coughs and congestion.  There are itchy rashes and sharp pains that you have never experienced before.

Fortunately, there are plenty of things that can be helpful for these symptoms; some of them are easy, natural, and over the counter.  And when the time requires, there are really safe prescription medications that work fabulously.

Here are a list of common problems and basic treatments that are extremely safe in pregnancy.  Again, in most cases of pregnancy, less medication is preferred… But that being said, being pregnant shouldn’t also mean that you are required to be miserable.

Safe Medications to Take During Pregnancy (when in doubt, call your doctor for advice!)

Allergy

  • Benadryl (diphenhydramine)
  • Claritin
  • Zyrtec or Allegra

Cold and Flu

  • Tylenol (acetaminophen)
  • Saline nasal drops or spray
  • Warm salt/water gargle
  • Basic Robitussin or Mucinex (without any added ingredients such as Sudafed)

Constipation

First Aid Ointment

  • Bacitracin

Rashes
